Michael Rau - Of Counsel

For over 25 years Mr. Rau has been a leader in the field of media technologies. Beginning in 1981, Mr. Rau held high-level technical positions with the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), one of the most influential technical organizations in the United States, culminating in his appointment as NAB's Senior Vice-President for Science & Technology in 1992. Mr. Rau was one of the earliest architects of what are now conventionally known as HDTV, digital television and digital systems.

While working for NAB, Mr. Rau obtained his law degree from the Catholic University of America where he was a senior member of the Law Review.

Beginning in 1997, Mr. Rau founded a database and internet development company called MEDIANEXT, Inc. of Vienna, Virginia. In 2007, after guiding the company to significant profitability with five products and services, MEDIANEXT was purchased by Lincolnshire Equity Partners of New York City.

Mr. Rau focuses his legal practice on the enforcement of patent, copyright and trademark rights in the Federal Courts of the United States and before the International Trade Commission, and obtaining patent, copyright and trademark protection for individuals and companies before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, U.S. Copyright Office and foreign patent offices.

Mr. Rau's technical expertise includes substantial work in the following areas (in some he is considered a technology expert):

Media & Communications technologies:

Wireless modulation systems, analog, spread spectrum and digital techniques including OFDM, COFDM, VSB and QAM systems among others. Audio and video compression and transmission algorithms. Microwave systems including cellular, satellite, GPS and terrestrial systems.

Computer and Telecommunications:

Network design, router protocols, data addressing protocols, switches, some optical networking. Component level computer hardware design including memory addressing, circuit board attachment, fast read/write techniques among others.

Internet-based Applications:

Software development including HTML, XML, PHP, Perl C++ and related software languages on Linux platforms. Application development, integrating databases (including database architecture and design), web page presentation techniques, server and database optimizations. Expert in how to present internet based applications for intensive usage. Expert in MYSQL database development.

Business Processes:

Automated systems to improve customer service quality and pro-actively find technical problems. Integrated internet applications with office systems to improve productivity. Created applications that used networks to increase efficiency of disparate organizations.

Selected as Young Leader for Technology Business by the AMERICAN SWISS FOUNDATION.
