The Capitol Patent & Trademark Law Firm, PLLC ® (“CAPPAT”) was founded in early 2006. Its founding partner had worked for large IP law firms but desired to be more responsive to clients and to protect clients from the ever-increasing costs charged by large law firms.

Today, CAPPAT's ® offices are located in Vienna, Virginia, close to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (“USPTO”).

Advantages of Using CAPPAT®

All partner-level attorneys—no associates; so you know you are being serviced by attorneys each having 30-40 years of experience.

Simplified fee structure. You no longer have to pay for every reporting letter or every communication received from the USPTO. CAPPAT only charges a fee for substantive work that is completed; no fees are ever charged for reporting communications from the USPTO.

Because we are close to the USPTO, your patent applications will most likely be issued sooner and will be stronger than if they were handled by a firm outside of the Washington, D.C. area. The reason for this is straightforward: we conduct in-person interviews with USPTO Examiners. Many times this reduces the time it takes to overcome objections raised by USPTO Examiners. Further, in-person interviews many times reduce the need to file detailed written explanations with the USPTO. The less put in writing translates into stronger issued patents.

A wealth of experience. CAPPAT attorneys have U.S. Supreme Court experience, extensive federal court litigation experience, have extensive IPR experience, have won awards from MIT, and have been appointed to nanotechnology committees by the legislature of Virginia. Since 1996, a CAPPAT attorney has represented one of the world’s leading research and development laboratories, Bell Laboratories, and has filed and prosecuted over 1,000 U.S. patent applications.
